Step By Step Guide To Creating a Merge Publication

Here is the step by step guide to creating a Merge Replication!
In merge replication, the merge-agent can be centrally located on the distributor, or it can reside on every subscriber. In push replication, the merge agent will reside on the distributor and In a pull replication, the merge agent is on every subscriber.

STEP 1. Open SQL Server Management Studio from start menu or typing "SSMS" in run command and connect to the publisher instance of SQL Server 2005/2008. Expand Replication, right-click Local Publications, and click New Publication.

Step 2: After clicking New Publication, this brings you to the new publication wizard, click Next to Continue.

Step 3: On the Publication Database screen, highlight AdventureWorks (Select your Publishing database), and click Next to continue.

STEP 4. On the Publication Type screen, highlight Merge Publication, and click Next to continue.

STEP 5. Now you are asked what version of SQL Server the subscribers are running. This is because different versions of SQL Server handle merge replication differently. In this case, check only SQL Server 2008, and click Next.

STEP 6. On the Articles screen, you can select what data and objects you want to replicate. Expand Tables, and check the Address box. You can also set the properties for an article from this screen. Make sure Address is highlighted, click Article Properties, and then click Set Properties of Highlighted Table Article. Check all of the default values, but don't make any changes; click OK. Back at the Articles screen, click Next to continue.

STEP 7. Now you can filter the data that is replicated. You do not want to filter the data in this case, so click Next to continue.

STEP 8. Now we are at Snapshot Agent screen, check the box to create a snapshot immediately, and check the Schedule the Snapshot agent to run at the following times. Leave the default schedule, and click Next.

STEP 9. On the Agent Security screen, you are asked how the agents should log in and access data. To set this for the snapshot agent, click the Security Settings button next to Snapshot Agent.

STEP 10. Usually you have to create an account for the agent to run under, but to make the task simpler, you will run the agent using the SQL Server Agent account, so select the radio button for that option, and click OK.

STEP 11. Now we are back at the Agent Security screen now click Next to continue.

STEP 12. On the Wizard Actions screen, you can have the wizard create the publication, write a script to create the publication that you can run later, or do both. Leave the Create the Publication box checked, and click Next to continue.

STEP 13. For completing the Wizard screen, you need to enter a name for the new publication, so enter Merge_Pub, and click Finish.

STEP 14. Once wizard is finished, click Close.

How to track changes In Merge Replication?
SQL Server adds some new tables to the publication and subscription databases. The most important of these is the MSmerge_contents table, which is used to track changes to the replicated table as well as possible conflicts. SQL Server also creates triggers on the publishing and subscription servers used for merge replication. These triggers are automatically invoked when changes are made at either of these locations.
