Step by Step Guide to Configure Default Instance as a Distribution Server in SQL Server 2008

Step by Step Guide to Configure Default Instance as a Distribution Server:

In this example, I am using [NARESH\SQLDBADMIN] for Distribution Server. You can use both Publisher and Distributor for Same Server, but placing the distributor component for own dedicated server for performance reasons where level of replication activity increases. Dedicated Distributor server reduces the load on Publisher and increases the network traffic.

Step 1: Open your SQL Server Management Studio and connect to your server then Right-Click on Replication and click configure Distribution.

Step 2: Now you have to specify the snapshot folder and click Next.

Step 3: After clicking Next, below screen will appear. Now you have to supply a name for the distribution database as well as location Information for distribution database data file and log file, and click Next to continue.

Step 4: Now you are on Publisher Screen below, where you can choose which servers you want to configure as Publisher. Follow the screens below to add Publisher Server Name. In this example i am using Publisher Server name is [NARESH\INSTANCE1]

After Clicking “Add SQL Server” new window will open “Connect to Server” give the server name and credentials and click connect. Once connected the window will looks like below. Now click Next

Step 5: Now you are on Distributor Password Screen below, where you have to enter password and click Next to continue.

Step 6: On the Wizard Action Screen, leave the Configure Distribution box checked and Click Next.

Step 7: Now you are on Complete the Wizard Screen below, review your selection and Click Next.

Step 8: Now you are successfully configured the Default Instance as a Distributor Server.

NOTE:
1.    Do not configure the Distribution database Shrink automatically.
2.    Do not configure the Distribution database for grow unlimited, as per the Microsoft recommends setting a fixed size for this database.
3.    If multiple Publishers then consider for creating a distribution database for each Publisher, instead of using single distribution database.
4.    If you create individual distribution database for each publisher then data flowing through each distribution database is distinct.
5.    Place a Distribution database log in a separate drive for increasing the performance of write transaction and Replication.
